We need optimal auditory health, to interact properly with our family, friends, colleagues, clients and other people we may come across. Just as other senses weaken with age, hearing is no exception.

Although the most common reasons for hearing loss are aging and constant exposure to loud noise, there are a few health issues that can cause hearing impairment. In this post, we will discuss four of such health issues.

Acoustic Trauma

It’s damage to the eardrums, caused by a sudden and loud sound, such as an explosion. In most of the cases, it can lead to conductive hearing impairment.

You may experience it after attending an earsplitting concert, or working with noisy machines. In general, these causes leave temporary effects. On the other hand, constant exposure to such situations can lead to permanent acoustic trauma, which is the ultimate onset of hearing impairment.

The sufferer can experience hearing problem in noisy conditions, i.e., in a narrow frequency around 4 kHz.

A hearing aid might be needed for proper hearing ability.

Otitis Media

It’s an inflammation of the middle ear. It can affect one or both ears simultaneously.

  • Otitis Media is a major cause of hearing loss in kids.
  • It mostly affects kids in winter or spring.
  • Its timely diagnosis and treatment doesn’t cause hearing impermanent. The medication can be followed at home according to the doctor’s instructions.
  • If the problem persists, it can lead to permanent hearing loss.

This is a virus or bacterium that can accumulate fluid behind the eardrum. As a result, the patient can also fall victim to cold, allergy or respiratory infection.

The accumulated fluid causes ache, swelling, and redness in the affected ear. This condition is known as acute otitis media. It can hinder the eardrum to vibrate correctly, which can result in temporary hearing issues.

At a severe stage, the doctors may suggest myringotomy, which is a minor surgical incision.

Usher’s Syndrome

This rare disease, also known as Retinitis Pigmentosa, is a double-edged sword since it affects hearing as well as vision. It is innate in the victim to a certain degree. This condition aggravates with age and can cause deafness. In addition, it can deteriorate sight, causing night blindness to daytime vision loss.

Also known as ear ringing, it’s a noise in the sufferer’s head. The patient can hear a sharp whistling or buzzing sound in the head, or in one or both ears.

The intensity and type of sound may vary among the victims of tinnitus, which could be:

  • High-frequency whistling
  • Buzzing like butter sizzling in a hot pan
  • Thumping like heartbeat

The most common reasons for tinnitus include:

  • Exposure to noise
  • Drugs
  • Diseases
  • Stress
  • Head injuries

The tinnitus patients are highly prone to hearing loss.

Hearing is a vital ability that allows us to carry out our routine properly. A disorder in auditory health can wreak havoc within our ordered routine.

The above health issues signify the onset of hearing loss, so take proactive steps if you experience even minor symptoms.
